Renowned painter, sculptor and historian Colombian, born in 1904 in Suaita, (Santander) in the home of Don and Dona Isaiah Acuna Virginia Tapias. He died in 1994.

His life

1910 to 1913. He attended public school Suaita.

1915 - Studied at the Colegio Universitario del Socorro.

1916 to 1917. He studied at the College de Vélez.

1921 - Studied at the Central Technical Institute in Bogota, led by the Brothers of the Christian Schools.

1922 to 1923. He joined the National College of St. Bartholomew, run by the Jesuits.

He also entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Bogotá, where he studied painting with Master Francisco A. Cano. His works from this period were Naturalists.

1924 - won a competition at the departmental government of Santander, which paid for her trip to Europe and a pension.

1924 to 1926. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, where he is master Jean Boucher. Also visit the Academy Colarossi, as chair of sculpture was by Emile Antoine Bourdelle.

Work and career

AL Master Acuna is remodeling some of the most important buildings colonianes of Colombia, as the House of the founder of Tunja, the House Clerk Don Juan de Vargas and his own home in the town of Villa de Leyva, where he created a museum art and paleontology.

Master Acuna, was an artist with a long history and abundant and varied production. Campaigned for many years at the forefront of Colombian painting, one of its leading figures. 1926 - April. Participated in the Grand Salon of French Artists.

1926 - Julio. Participated in the Salon des Independents, which was then chaired by Paul Signac.

1926 - October. Participated in the Salon d'Automne.

1930 - Appointed Professor of Drawing-National College of San Bartolomé de Bogota, replacing Don Roberto Pizano Restrepo. In this year won a competition to reward the best monument to Bolivar, which. would be given away by the Republic of Venezuela to Bogotá.

1931 - He sent several pictures to the Salon Viña del Mar, Chile where he earned a first prize for all of its exhibits.

1932 -1936. He was professor of painting at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes de Bogotá.

Executed the bust of General Francisco de Paula Santander, which is now in the Academia Historica, and the monument to Diego Uribe.

1942 to 1944. He was manager of the Teatro Colon in Bogota.

1942 - He made a second edition of his book: "The Art of Colombian Indians, Mexico, D. F., 1942.

1942 - October. Participated in the Third Salon of Colombian artists with oils: Placita Colonial and masque, and won third prize for painting with the latter.

1943 - Led the National Exhibition Hall.

1943 - Appointed director of the Society of Colon Theater Set and made numerous stage sets for the official season of the National Theater Company.

1943 to 1951. Professor of painting at the School of Fine Arts in Bogotá.

Won third prize in composition with human figure, with the Double Portrait.

1946 to 1951. He was appointed Inspector of the Drawing Section of National Ethnological Institute.

1947 - Appears Refranero book Colombiano, Bogota, Editorial Agra, 1947.

1953. July 20. Group exhibition to commemorate the patriotic celebrations. Participate in "The Wife of the Merchant; return from exile, and Marriage Lugareño.'s Pointillist technique.

1954 to 1964. He was appointed Director of the Colonial Museum in Bogota.

1955 - Collective exhibition in the pavilion of the Second International Fair of Bogota.

1956 - Exhibition at Gallery El Callejon, of Bogota, several tables with a new style called by the same artist as "essential". Participates in the exhibition "Current Trends", the Colombian Institute of Hispanic Culture, in which he presents the painting "Toril", cubist-influenced.

1960 - Makes a reproduction of the sculpture "Monkey's battery, placed on the Small square of San Diego, Bogota. The original rests in the Bogotá Museum of Colonial Art.

1960 - July 27. Opening of the fresco mural at the Academy of Language.

1961 - April. Organize the course on art in Colombia in the Faculty of Law of the Colegio del Rosario.

1961 - June. The Bulletin of the Museum of Colonial Art published in Volume I, N9 12, a "List of the main architects and builders who worked hitherto known in the New Kingdom of Granada (Colombia) during the Colonial era.

1961 - July 24 to August 10. Retrospective Exhibition 1931-1961) in the Sala Luis Angel Arango: 43 paintings and 13 sculptures in wood.

1961 - October 30. Exhibition at Madrid 26 oil paintings and 6 sculptures in wood and bronze). The luxury catalog brings a written submission by Clement Airó. It was sponsored by the Department of Fine Arts.
