"My father, Egil, and uncle Vidvar were
incarcerated for their depiction of Nazi war crimes. Uncle Gunnars was
exiled to Siberia for his paintings of Stalin and Hitler. Uncle Askold,
Count of Courland, fled to America earlier to seek greater freedom.
He was later joined by the family who ultimately lost their country,
Latvia. Their first sight in the New Land was the Statue of Liberty.
She confirmed their dreams of faith, hope, charity, and above all, the
liberty to create."
