Droungas, Greek (1940 - )
Achilles Droungas was born in Piraeus in 1940. He studied
graphic arts and stage design at the Athens School of Fine
Art from 1958 to 1965. In 1970 with a State Scholarship went
to London, where he continued his studies at the Slade School
of Fine Art. As a graphic artist he participated in the most
important international graphic shows between 1967 and 1976.
His graphics have been published by Christies Contemporary
Art in London, Editions Alecto in London, International Graphics
Society in New York, Redfern Gallery in London, Zoumboulakis
Gallery in Athens. They can be found in the Museum of Modern
Art in New York, Victoria and Albert Museum in London, National
Museum of Wales, Bibliothèque National de Paris and
other public and private collections in Europe and USA. Twice
he won grants from the Ford Foundation. In 1974 he started
painting and in 1978 he had his first show of oil paintings
at the Zoumboulakis Gallery in Athens. In 1982 he painted a
monumental mural (45m) for Atheneum Intercontinental Hotel
in Athens. Since then he has shown his paintings in various
galleries in Europe and USA. His paintings can be found in
Greece at the National Gallery in Athens, the Vorres Museum
in Paeania, and in many public and private collections in Greece
and abroad.
