Eberhard Eggers, German (1939 - )
One of Germany's most famous
contemporary artists, WP Eberhard Eggers has received a strong
international reputation for his etchings, engravings, hand-made
books and sculpture. In total over two hundred one man exhibitions
of his art have taken place throughout Europe and America since
he began exhibiting his work in the mid 1960's. Recent one man
exhibitions have taken place at the Galerie Hohmann, Hamburg
(1996), the Galerie Duden, Berlin (2000) and Kunstverein Bad
Salzdefurth (2001). Eggers has also been a visiting professor
at the Universities of Hawaii and Wisconsin as well as an appointed
professor of art at the Arizona State University (1986).
WP Eberhard Eggers concentrated almost exclusively upon engraving
and etching during the late 1960's and the 1970's decade. His
unique blend of surrealism and psychological imagery gained
him many commissions in both Germany and the United States.
Portrait of a Proud Lady was published in 1968 and was his first
commissioned etching for an American publisher. With its superb
use of both etching and tonal aquatint it is a wonderful example
of Eggers's truly unique art.
Portrait of a Proud Lady was commissioned by the Associated
American Artists of New York in a sole limited edition of 250
impressions. Since its creation in the mid 1930's the Associated
American Artists commissioned original graphic art from such
great masters as Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton, Reginald Marsh
and many others. In the 1960's and 1970's its artists included
Jack Levine, Sidney Chafetz and Herbert Lewis Fink.
