Such a conflation of terms implies, that there is an aspect to Gaines' artistic practice that strays from the rigorously systemic,quasi -scientific method of Conceptual Art. Unlike many of his conceptualist colleagues, Gaines directly confronts the positivist practice of Conceptual Art. For Gaines, logical systems are not objective truth but subjective practices.
