Gerstein attended Pratt Institute School of Architecture as an undergraduate between 1969 and 1970.
He is divorced and has two sons. He works as a commercial real estate broker.
The piece is an early work. In later work, he incorporates parts of, or whole images of, realist objects, in the color field. During his undergraduate studies, Conceptual art was popular and painting was declared dead. Despite this, he continued to produce a body of work, that has yet to be exhibited in museums or galleries.
