Born in Hilo, Hawaii in 1919, Goto received an MFA from the Art Institute of Chicago in 1946. Upon graduation he won a traveling fellowship that allowed him to study in France under Fernand Leger and in Switzerland with Andre Lhote.
A friend of Willem DeKooning, Goto became intensely involved in the New York School of Abstract Expressionism. He went on to exhibit in prestigious New York art institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art, Sindin Galleries, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Goto’s life and art have been filled with adventure, including 17 years as an Art Director for ABC. His international career included exhibitions in Hawaii, New York and China. This exhibition will display a diverse collection of paintings, works on paper, sculptures and visual documentation of Goto’s life and work.
