Maury Hurt, American (1934 - 2013)
Maury Hurt is a true Florida artist. He was born in Orlando in 1934 and has lived there his entire life. After graduating from the University of Florida with a bachelor of design degree in 1956, he worked in graphic design for several years until he decided to give up his partnership in the firm and become a full-time painter. His first paintings produced at the Maitland Art Center, where he rented a studio in the '60s, reflected an intense interest in primitive and archaic art, with an emphasis given to animals, human-animal relationships and the basic and utilitarian aspects of prehistoric and primitive life. His fascination with this subject continues to this day.
He went through a number of artistic periods, including surrealism and abstraction. His intense interest in the old masters, such as Frans Hals, Rembrandt and Velazquez, have guided him throughout the years and continue to influence him.
His paintings are in many private, corporate and institutional collections, including the Cornell Fine Arts Museum at Rollins College, Maitland Art Center, The City of Orlando, and the Orlando Museum of Art. He is currently exhibiting his works at the Mennello Museum of American Art in Orlando, from Oct. 15 through Jan. 30, 2011.
