Hilome Jose [1947 - ]

Hilome Jose was born in 1947 in the town of Jeremie on the southwestern tip of Haiti. After elementary school he came to Port-au-Prince, where he studied carpenterie. He met the well known artist Calixte Henri with whom he spent most his time learning to draw and paint. In 1971 he comes with his first painting to the Gallery Monnin. Even though his drawing needed improvement, his colors were striking. This first meeting led to a long relation with the Gallery as his work continued to improve. He is a journeyman knife painter with a distinctive style.
