Jay Killian, American (1927 - 1994)

Jay Killian

Born in Jamaica Plains just outside of Boston MA, in 1927. His parents moved to Winchester MA in the mid forties. My father served in the US ARMY, and when he got out he became an illustrator for the Boston Globe (newspaper). He married my mother Jean Richardson in I believe 1950-51, they bought their first house on Walnut St. in Winchester MA in 1957. As my mother and dad had more kids they sold Winchester in 1965 and bought a house in Nahant MA.
Up until this point my father had been doing freelance illustration work via an agent. You can see some of his work at NASA, but my fathers real love was in sketching and he did the centerfold illustrations for Yankee Magazine. In 1968 he went to work for Red Farm Studios in Pawtucket RI ( the sketch you have associated with the biography was done while at Red Farm Studios. Red Farm had another company called Cardinal Greetings my father has done hundreds of greeting cards as well as other art products while at Red Farm. In 1969 my parents bought a house in Providence RI on the East Side next to Brown University and Pembroke College. Due to the racial riots in Providence at the time my father sold the house after my youngest sister was born and they purchased a mansion in Newport RI., my father left Red Farm Studios but still did work for them from time to time. My parents lived in Newport until 1978 and then they moved to Dingle in county Kerry Ireland with my two younger sisters. My father died in 1994 from throat cancer and is buried in Dingle alongside my oldest brother. My mother and sisters returned to the US. If you have ever been to Buckingham Palace they have a painting done by my father of Trinity Church in Newport RI. It was still hanging there 2 years ago when I brought my sons over to England for a visit.
