Born in 1938, in Bussi sul Tirino, Italy, Ugo La Pietra lives and works in Milan.
Ugo La Pietra graduated from Milan’s Politecnico in 1964, where he was assistant professor until 1974, and at the Pescara
Faculty of Architecture from 1967 to 1979. He was appointed tenured professor of Project Design at the ISA of Monza, in
1977, after serving as professor on the faculties of Torino, Palermo and Venice. He is President of the Observatory AD Arte
(Monza), founder of the Dipartimento di Progettazione Artistica per l'Impresa in the Academy of Fine arts of Brera.
In 1967, he began his research on the theory of the “Unbalancing System” (“Sistema desequilibrante”) (1967-1972), which involves an attempt to intervene on physical space and territory, through symbolic actions, utilizing the image as a revelatory tool. In 1971, he designed urban audiovisual tools for “Trigon 1971” in Graz, Austria. He directed the film “La Grande Occasione” in 1972. He was a founding member of the “Global Tools” group (1973), an alternative school of architecture and design… In 1974, he organized the first exhibition of radical design, “Gli abiti dell’imperatore”, in Milan, Belgrade and Graz. A year later he won first prize at the Nancy Architectural Film Festival. U. La Pietra has organized many exhibitions: for the International Center of Brera in Milan (1975-1979), the Milan Triennale (since 1968), the Venice Biennale, and the “Abitare il tempo” events in Verona (1986-1997)…
He has participated in many other events (“Italy: The new domestic landscape,” MOMA, 1972…) and exhibitions: Venice Biennale (1970, 1978), Milan Triennale (1972), Centre Pompidou, Fondazione Mudima (Milan, 2008). He won the Compas d’Or (1979). He was editor-in-chief and director if several magazines and reviews: “In” (founded in 1969), “Inpiù”, “Progettare in più”, “Brera Flash”, “Fascicolo Area”, “Abitare il tempo.” Editor of the “Domus” magazine in the 1980s, and was Director of the magazine “D'Artigianato tra arte e design.” He has authored many articles, monograph and catalogs: La ricerca morfologica (Locarno, 1965), Il sistema disequilibrante (Editions Toselli, Milano, 1970), La grande occasione (Milano, 1976), La riappropriazione dell’ ambiente (Milano, 1977), Fumo negli occhi (Milano, 1977), Istruzioni per l’uso della città (Editions Ass. Cult., Piana, 1979), Abitare la città (Editions Alinea, Florence, 1987), Gio Ponti (l’arte s’innamora dell’ industria) (Editions Coliseum, Milano, 1988)... This exhibition, accompanied by a catalog published by Editions HYX, will present Ugo La Pietra’s major projects of the 1960s and 1970s (Casa dello scultore Carmelo Cappello, 1960-62; Nodi Urbani,1966; Le immersioni, 1967/69; Il sistema desequilibrante, 1967-75; I Gradi di libertà, 1969-72; Il commutatore, 1970), objects (Globo Tissurato, 1967), films (“La Riappropriazione della città,” 1976; “La grande occasione,” 1972), displayed in an original scenography specially designed by Ugo La Pietra for the FRAC Centre.
