| Jack
Lane (1916 - )
Jack Lane currently lives in Woodland Hills, in the San Fernando
Valley near Los
Angeles. He was the artist who drew most of the caricatures for
the walls of the Hollywood Brown Derby restaurant from 1947 to
1987. Many of his sketches appear on the walls of the Brown Derby
restaurant in Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida.
He was born in Illinois on October 28, 1916, and he and his
wife, Mitzi, are still healthy and very active today. His book, "A
Gallery of Stars:The Hollywood Brown Derby Wall of Fame",
was just published recently, and will be available shortly.
The Hollywood Entertainment Museum recently featured much of
his work in a
special exhibit last year. He was interviewed in front of a
live audience there, and told many interesting anecdotes about
his various experiences as "Caricaturist to the Stars" at
the Derby. He could go on for hours with amazing stories about
the most famous celebrities of Hollywood's 'Glory Days' when
the biggest names of the day would seek him out, hoping to
be lucky enough to be drawn and put on the Wall of Fame.
One of his favorite bits of wisdom about art is this: "Every
human being is born an artist. Every single child at one time
or another picks up a crayon or a pencil and draws for enjoyment
for hours, recreating whatever he sees. The problem is most
kids eventually put the crayon down and move on to other things.
The ones who don't - wind up being the artists".
