Reviews:

Joanne Miller Rafferty’s splashes of color and quick line convey not just a lively style and pure technique, but (her) intense joy in her art and deep appreciation for the abstractions found in the many faces of land, sky and sea. This show is a treat to walk through, and is an experience of beauty in the sense of a classical aesthetic. Plato spoke of the beauty of ideal form, abstracted into classical proportions. These paintings present abstracted forms refined into an ideal.

     J. Taylor Basker, Artspeak

Rafferty builds from horizontal schemes and creates visual islands engulfed in color, handmade paper and golden string. You never know what will wash ashore. Another critic has called Rafferty’s work “Mood driven” and influenced by southwest art …. And one canvas at Broden evokes Frank Lloyd Wright’s famous Pennsylvania House, Fallingwater.

     Kevin Lynch, The Capitol Times

.. Rafferty is one of America’s most popular contemporary abstract artists. Even people who say they don’t like or understand abstract art like her. This art is elegant enough to go with traditional décor. And they’re abstracted landscapes and seascapes. You can see figures, or sky or land, and she even glues leaves to some of her paintings. People say” That looks just like an island we visited in the Caribbean”.

     Susan Broden, Broden Gallery, Wisconsin
