Ismael SAINCILUS (1940 – 2000)

 

    He was born in /940 in the central plain of the Artibonite. He completed high school in Port-au-Prince. He was a man of culture, of a philosophical turn of mind, who spoke impeccable French.
He Joined the Arts Centel; then the Foyer des Arts Plastiques and quickly found recognition.
This "master of icons" was the leading figure of the Artibonite school. His impiration, almost Byzantine, directed him towards religious themes, madOlllws with one or two children, but he was also inspired by peamnt life. His detailed style is reminiscellt of manuscript illuminatiol!.s.
Christian and vodou mythologies are closely intermingled in his work.
Although famous, he continued to reside in hi.s village, running a school at Petite Riviere. Venerated by his pupils, he taught them the love of well
finished work.
Saincilus died in 2000.
