About the piece:
In 1971, Juliana Seraphim, a master etcher from Lebanon, completed a portfolio of black and white etchings based on nine Nobel Prize Laureates in Literature: Yasanuri Kawabata, St. John Perse, T.S. Eliot, Samuel Beckett, Thomas Mann, Gabriela Mistral, Pablo Neruda, Erik-Axel Karlfeldt and Miguel Angel Asturias. Only some of the completed editions were shipped to the United States before Lebanon exploded in civil war and the balance of the etchings were lost. One of these editions, Asturias I, was based on the famous Nobel Prize Laureate, Guatemalan author and poet, Miguel Angel Asturias and was shipped to Guatemala in1972 where Asturias hand signed each etching opposite Seraphim’s signature. Asturias died just two years later. All the etchings are excellent examples of Seraphim’s master etching technique and this one which is signed by the above author, as well as the artist, is very rare.
