JOHN GRILLO (1917-  )

John Grillo was born in Lawrence, Mass July 4 1917 and studied at Hartford School of Fine Arts California School of Fine Arts San Francisco and with Hans Hoffman from 1948 1951 His first show at the Howard Wise Gallery in New York City on a stormy miserable day in 1961 had such great impact, "It was like walking into a room full of sunshine." Critic April Kingsley has described his work as a collage of "spiralling forms, dazzling color chords, dynamic diagonals, and jump.cut spatial locations, fast rhythms, fleeting fragmentary shapes..." as hedonistic and full of joy as the best Hoffman's of the 'sixties, and are even more sensuous."
