| LESLIE
SMITH (1948 - )
(England, Born, 1948)
A contemporary British painter and print maker, Leslie Smith studied
at the Maidstone Art School (1972) and took post graduate studies
at the Royal Academy Schools in London. During the 1980's and
1990's his art has been the subject of exhibitions in both England
and Holland.
Smith's art concentrates upon formal gardens, both real and imaginary.
A meticulous craftsman, he states, "I aim to take a snapshot
in time, in which everything is ordered in a vaguely surreal atmosphere
enhanced by the conspicuous absence of people."
Smith's first silkscreens, Sheffield Park Garden in Autumn and
Stourhead in Winter, were created by the artist in the mid 1990's.
Each print contained over twenty separate colour printings. This
striking rendition, entitled Het Loo, contains at least that amount
of precise colour registrations. It depicts the famous gardens
of the Dutch Royal Palace. Started by Prince William of Orange
in the 1680's, the gardens of Het Loo represent the finest elements
of Baroque garden art.
Het Loo is a spectacular example of Smith's silkscreen art. Combining
multiple colour printings he portrays a beautifully sculpted landscape
with precision and clarity. This is one of the most amazing works
of contemporary art one will see.
