Mel Smothers, American (1947 - )
Was born in Sacramento, CA, and earned a BA from California State University at Sacramento, studied with Wayne Thiebaud at University of California at Davis and MFA from University of Idaho. He moved his studio to NY in 2005.
His work is about a painting dialogue created with Andy Warhol’s work. It proposes a dialog between visual artists in a tradition of van Gogh's letters to Emile Bernard; Charlie Russell's letters to Cutapuis, (the Blackfoot sculptor,) and C.G. Jung's, Libor Novis.
He was selected for the Cooper-Union’s,”Emerging Artists of 2007,” exhibition in New York City. He had his first NY solo exhibition at Judaica Museum’s Gilbert Pavillion Gallery in Mar 09. He lives and paints in New York City, Lake Tahoe, CA and Windley Key, FL.
