French artist Claude Venard used several Modern art techniques to create this energetic scene.

The harshly outlined trees are reminiscent of those seen in paintings by Gauguin and Cezanne, while the disjointed bodies of the two people recall the flowing figures of a Matisse painting. Paired with the bright colors, the whole work feels composed as a love letter to Modern Art. This piece is signed in the lower left corner and is nicely framed in a gold leaf frame. Provenance: Galerie Felix Vercel, New York.

About The Artist: Claude Venard

Claude Venard was born in 1913 into a business family from Burgogne. At the age of 17 he began to take evening classes in painting at the Ecole des Arts Appliqués. However, after six years of conscientious study, he was forced, in order to support himself, to spend most of 1936 working as a restorer at the Louvre Museum. This experience, however, turned out to be beneficial in as much as it enabled the young artist to fill the gaps still...
