Delita Alvarez Piercy

American (1936)

About the artist:

Delita Alvarez Piercy has always been inspired by nature. Ever since she was young, she would wander through fields enchanted by the beauty of nature. It is her quest to capture this beauty in all of her art, whether a religious Icon, the expression of a face in a portrait, a spacious landscape or a poem.

After raising her seven children in Bloomington IN, her husband Bob encouraged her to get her degree from Indiana University. Because she had worked as a freelance illustrator for most of her life, she chose to study Art. She graduated in 1982 with a Bachelors of Fine Arts.

In her early years, she worked as a freelance illustrator at St. Philip Neri Church, William H Block Company, the Gilbert and Sullivan Town Theatre of Bloomington and others. She has been commissioned for countless paintings of the Bloomington campus at Indiana University, and her work continues to be displayed at IU and in offices all over Bloomington. Over the years she has received awards for her landscapes in pastel, watercolor and oil painting. More recently, she has been exploring the techniques of classical religious Icon painting. Her religious paintings can be glimpsed in the chapel of St. Paul's Newman Center and at St. Martha's Catholic Church. At St. Martha's, she also served as a consultant in choosing the art and design for the renovation of the church.

Currently she resides in Temecula California with two of her daughters and her two cats. She enjoys working with plants, going for walks outside, creating art, writing poetry and journaling.
