about Critical Mass

Witness this compelling hand-signed Conceptual Art aquatint by Dennis Kardon capturing a blurred crowd of faces watching intently in a stadium setting, exploring themes of collective experience and mass observation.

This powerful figurative print exemplifies the Conceptual Art movement’s examination of social dynamics and human behavior, with deliberately blurred imagery that suggests the loss of individual identity within large gatherings. Kardon’s masterful aquatint technique creates atmospheric depth and psychological tension, transforming a simple crowd scene into a meditation on spectatorship, conformity, and shared experience. A thought-provoking example of contemporary Conceptual and Figurative Art that appeals to collectors interested in socially engaged printmaking and explorations of collective human behavior.

Dennis Kardon (born 1950) is an American painter based in Brooklyn, New York. The New York Times's Ken Johnson has described Dennis Kardon's paintings as "generously painterly, voluptuously creepy narrative pictures of familial conflict, sexual angst and infantile yearning." Kardon's work has been exhibited widely in the United States and abroad. Kardon was born in Des Moines, Iowa. In 1973, he graduated from Yale University with a B.A. degree...

About The Medium: Aquatint

An etching process in which tone is created by treating a plate with fine particles of acid resistant material (like powder resin) and then placing the plate in an acid bath. The acid bites into the plate between the grains of resin and when printed, the mass of tiny spots produces a textured area with tonal effects similar to watercolor wash.
