George Tzannes is an American painter of Greek origins. In 1971, he went to Kythera, Greece, the island of his father’s birth. The island’s natural beauty and how the people there still lived connected to the land deeply inspired him. Since then, the island’s nature and ancient architecture have become his creative references. Tzannes’s body of work employs realism and yet transcends simple representation to expand into almost timeless and spiritual qualities. While his palette ranges from muted colors for paintings to black, gray, or sepia shades for drawings and monotypes, delicate light is the unifying element that imbues all Tzannes’s artworks.
