About The Artist: Kokunimasa Utagawa

Kokunimasa Utagawa (aka Kunimasa V) was a prolific artist who worked across the Meiji, Taisho and Showa periods. Born in 1874 to the artist Hosai Baido (or Kunimasa IV), Kokunimasa worked in the Utagawa style, carrying the long line of Utagawa printmakers well into the 20th century. Is a technique for printing text, images or patterns used widely throughout East Asia and originating in China in antiquity as a method of printing on textiles and later paper. Ukiyo-e is the best-known type of Japanese woodblock art print. An earlier term for a woodcut, usually on larger, rougher pieces of wood.
