An incomplete suite of 8 etchings (originally 10) by Marcel Gromaire titled "Les Contes de Gaspard de la Nuit" or "The Tales of Gaspard de la Nuit".

Engraved in 1930 by Gromaire and Published in 1962 by Teriade in Paris, each work is signed in pencil by the artist. The suite comes from the collection of the late Larry Saphire. These etchings originally accompanied a collection of poems by Aloysius Bertrand and came from the collection of the late Larry Saphire.

Marcel Gromaire was a French painter. He painted many works on social subjects and is often associated with Social Realism, but Gromaire can be said to have created an independent oeuvre distinct from groups and movements. About The Medium: Etching

The printing process of using strong acid or mordant to cut into the unprotected parts of a metal surface to create a design in intaglio (incised) in the metal. In traditional pure etching, a metal (usually copper, zinc or steel) plate is covered with a waxy ground which is resistant to acid. The artist then scratches off the ground with a pointed etching needle where they want a line to appear in the finished piece, exposing the bare metal. The plate is then put through a high-pressure printing press together with a sheet of paper (often moistened to soften it). The paper picks up the ink from the etched lines, making a print.
