about Life Boat

Life Boat by Mary Henry is a striking 1985 etching on Arches paper that brings Pop Art sensibilities to nautical subject matter, hand-signed, titled, numbered, and dated in pencil as edition 20-Feb.

This 19.75 x 25.75 inch black and white print demonstrates Henry’s ability to transform maritime imagery into bold graphic compositions, capturing the essential form and character of a lifeboat with clean lines and dramatic contrast characteristic of Pop Art’s reductive aesthetic. The artist’s precise etching technique creates rich tonal variations and textural depth that elevate this nautical theme beyond simple representation. Custom framing is available to complement this exceptional, limited edition work on premium Arches paper.

About The Artist: Mary Henry

Mary Henry (American, 1913–2009) embraced geometry as relational to the structures and environments around us. Despite critical recognition of her work and a steady presence in exhibitions that began in 1938, her slower path as a woman artist based on the West Coast may have kept her under-recognized in the greater art world. About The Medium: Etching

The printing process of using strong acid or mordant to cut into the unprotected parts of a metal surface to create a design in intaglio (incised) in the metal. In traditional pure etching, a metal (usually copper, zinc or steel) plate is covered with a waxy ground which is resistant to acid. The artist then scratches off the ground with a pointed etching needle where they want a line to appear in the finished piece, exposing the bare metal. The plate is then put through a high-pressure printing press together with a sheet of paper (often moistened to soften it). The paper picks up the ink from the etched lines, making a print.
