About the artist:
R. Duane Hendricks is an artist, composer, conductor, pianist, trombonist, and teacher. He studied at MacPhail College of Music, the University of Minnesota, Brandon University and the University of Calgary. He earned a Bachelor of Music Education degree and a Master of Music degree in Music Composition. He studied piano with Millie Rood and Orville Sveen, trombone with Daryl Gibson, conducting with Frank Bencriscutto, art with Nancy McCartney and Betty Macdonald, and composition with Gregory Levin and William Jordan.
Hendricks the artist works mostly in dry pastel and acrylic paints. His preferred subject is the Canadian landscape, a subject which influences many of his musical compositions. He paints mainly realism, but also paints abstracts influenced by geography. Hiking and canoeing have put him in close contact with the outdoors and the many painting possibilities in nature.
He has exhibited with Collectors Gallery of Fine Art (Calgary AB), the Federation of Canadian Artists, Gibson’s Fine Art (Calgary AB), Heron Bay Gallery (Shediac, NB), the Leighton Centre (Calgary AB), CAAG Gallery (Canmore AB) and the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies (Banff AB).
Hendricks the musician holds Bachelors and Masters degrees in Music and Education, and has taught for more than 40 years in schools, universities and privately. He plays the trombone and piano, conducts and composes. Following his school teaching career, he has concentrated on composing music mainly for high school, university and community concert bands and wind ensembles, for small ensembles, children’s choirs, and for piano and classical guitar.
He has appeared with Altius Brass, Bits of Brass, Calgary Concert Band, Calgary Wind Orchestra, CBC, Okanagan Symphony Orchestra, Victor Davies, Skitch Henderson, Ice Capades, RMCB Musical Ride, Ringling Brothers Circus Band, Rocky Mountain Concert Band, Camrose Lutheran College Wind Ensemble, high school bands, various pit orchestras and show bands, the Blue Monks, Foothills Big Band, Margaret Christl, Joan MacIsaac, Michael Mitchell and others.
He lived for many years in Calgary AB, and now lives in Gatineau QC where he has a studio for composing and painting, and for teaching piano, trombone, classical guitar and composition in studio or online.
