About The Artist: Shunji Sakuyama

Shunji Sakuyama was born on July 29, 1940 in Harbin, China. Son of Motoharu and Kiyoko (Wani) Sakuyama. came to the United States, 1966. He received his bachelor's degree from Tokyo Gakugei College and his Masters of Fine Arts at Brooklyn College. He studied at Brooklyn Museum Art School and Pratt Graphics Center for his postgraduate work....

About The Medium: Woodcut

A relief process in which the image is cut in a block of wood with tools such as knives, goughers or chisels. The image is inked with a roller, paper is applied to the surface and the back is then rubbed by hand or with a rubbing tool, transferring the image to the paper.
