about The Crown of Hops

This charming engraving by William Frederick Witherington depicts a tender outdoor scene where a mother crowns her child’s hair with hops and flowers, creating a moment of pastoral beauty and maternal affection.

Created in the Romanticism tradition of 19th-century landscape art, Witherington’s detailed line work captures the gentle intimacy of the figures dressed in period clothing against a natural setting. The composition celebrates the simple pleasures of rural life and the bond between mother and child, characteristic of Pre-Twentieth Century explorations of domestic harmony and nature’s bounty. A delightful example of Witherington’s engraving work that showcases his ability to render tender human moments within idyllic landscape settings.
