about In the Studio from Paroles Peintes

Alberto Giacometti was a Swiss artist best known for his gaunt bronze sculptures.

This piece - an etching on wove paper - depicts him in the studio producing one of those very sculptures. The work is printed from the cancelled plate and comes from the collection of the late Larry Saphire.

b. 1901, Borgonovo, Switzerland; d. 1966, Chur, Switzerland Alberto Giacometti was born October 10, 1901, in Borgonovo, Switzerland, and grew up in the nearby town of Stampa. His father, Giovanni, was a Post-Impressionist painter. From 1919 to 1920, he studied painting at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and sculpture and drawing at the Ecole des Arts et Métiers in Geneva. About The Medium: Etching

The printing process of using strong acid or mordant to cut into the unprotected parts of a metal surface to create a design in intaglio (incised) in the metal. In traditional pure etching, a metal (usually copper, zinc or steel) plate is covered with a waxy ground which is resistant to acid. The artist then scratches off the ground with a pointed etching needle where they want a line to appear in the finished piece, exposing the bare metal. The plate is then put through a high-pressure printing press together with a sheet of paper (often moistened to soften it). The paper picks up the ink from the etched lines, making a print.
