About the artist:
Part of an upper-class horse-racing genre painting tradition, Alfred De Prades is linked in style and subject matter to Francis Barlow (c1626-1704)"considered to be the father of British sporting art. . ." Involved for painters such as De Prades was meticulous study of both equine and human anatomy because many clients were horse owners who wanted both themselves and their prize horse to seem regal and impressive. Many of these paintings were made into racing prints, but that market faded during De Prades' lifetime with increasing use of photography. Alfred De Prades also painted other subjects inclding coaching scenes, portraits and military scenes. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, and the Suffolk Street Royal Society of British Artists.
