about Mornings by the Sea from the Rilke Portfolio

This lithograph is from the Rilke Portfolio by Ben Shahn, which is the artist’s response to the work of Austrian poet Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926).

Like many poets of the time, Rilke’s work focused on the sublime of nature and the solace and perfection found through religious practices. Shahn captures the sorrowful nature of this poetry through his prints, all of which are signed in pencil.

About The Artist: Ben Shahn

Born in Kovno, Lithuania to an orthodox Jewish family, Ben Shahn became one of America's leading Social-Realist painters. He settled with his family in Brooklyn, New York, and had an apprenticeship with a lithographer while taking evening classes in drawing. In 1929, he shared a studio with photographer Walker Evans and in 1930 at the Downtown Gallery had his first one-man exhibition. Until 1930, Shahn did lithography work and attended New York...

About The Medium: Lithograph

A print created using flat stones or metal plates. The artist creates a lithograph by drawing an image directly onto the printing element using materials like lithograph crayons or special grease pencils. After this, the drawing is transferred from the plate to the paper in multiples. A lithograph will not have dots when examined with a magnifying glass.
