about Blue Echoes

Shell-like forms cast blue shadows in this etching by Canadian artist Benita Sanders from 1968.

The blue "echo" gives the sense that the grey shapes are suspended from the page, giving the composition a sense of three-dimensions. Sanders is an expert printmaker, inspired by the north coast and forms found in nature.

About The Artist: Benita Sanders

Benita Sanders is a master printmaker, painter and pastelist who has lived on the Queen Charlotte Islands, now Haida Gwaii, for almost 40 years. From a first visit and solo kayak trip to the islands in the 60’s Benita has been captivated by the landscape of the north coast and in her work has captured its unique forms, contours, colours and light. Trained at L’Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, Chelsea Art School, London and the National...

About The Medium: Etching

The printing process of using strong acid or mordant to cut into the unprotected parts of a metal surface to create a design in intaglio (incised) in the metal. In traditional pure etching, a metal (usually copper, zinc or steel) plate is covered with a waxy ground which is resistant to acid. The artist then scratches off the ground with a pointed etching needle where they want a line to appear in the finished piece, exposing the bare metal. The plate is then put through a high-pressure printing press together with a sheet of paper (often moistened to soften it). The paper picks up the ink from the etched lines, making a print.
