In this untitled work, blue-and-white shapes peak out of heavy black abstract outlines.

With such a dark black, it appears as though the blue and white are hidden behind the black, composing the negative space. Greatly influenced by his upbringing in Minnesota in mill-working communities, Charles "Charlie" Hewitt works mainly in abstract compositions.

About The Artist: Charlie Hewitt

Growing up in Lewiston/Auburn and Brunswick, Hewitt was surrounded by the tremendous energy and culture of the millworking communities. He speaks of standing near the Wiseman Bridge, on Canal Street in Lewiston as a boy, to watch the hundreds of millworkers pour in and out of the mills at the end of a shift. About The Medium: Woodblock

Is a technique for printing text, images or patterns used widely throughout East Asia and originating in China in antiquity as a method of printing on textiles and later paper. Ukiyo-e is the best-known type of Japanese woodblock art print. An earlier term for a woodcut, usually on larger, rougher pieces of wood.
