American (1941)
In this magnificent hand-blown sculpture by American artist Dale Chihuly, a vibrant red object is gently cradled in the curved hollow of a rippling blue shell.
This unique piece comes from the Persians series by Chihuly, a collection started in 1986 as part of an exhibition at the Musee des Arts Decoratifs, Palais du Louvre in Paris. The pieces in this series explore undulating asymmetry, contrasting colors, fluid forms, and illusory movement. The goal of this series was to create objects that called back to the strange objects unearthed in archeological digs; useful, but unfamiliar to a modern eye. Chihuly drew on inspiration from Persia for these-naturally-but also ancient Greece, Art Nouveau, Mesopotamia, and Byzantine and Islamic traditions, as well as Venetian glass techniques. The result is a timeless object, both ancient and contemporary, unbound by the sands of time. This sculpture is in excellent condition and features and signature, date, and series marker etched into the red piece. Included with this work is a black pedestal and a clear plexiglass bonnet to ensure the work is displayed with minimal risk of damage and wear.
