About the artist:

Born in Coamo, Puerto Rico in 1932, Domingo García is a painter, sculptor and printmaker with a career spanning six decades. He studied painting at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Academy of Design in New York and with William Locke in London. In the year 1958, he established the Campeche Gallery in the Old San Juan, where artists of the period exhibited their works and new emerging ones studied painting with Domingo. Domingo's work integrated in the artistic movement of the country, in painting, engraving and sculpture but also as promoting the arts. In 1988, he founded the Latin-American Gallery, in Old San Juan, which became a centre of culture and sponsorship of the arts. In 1972 he received the Guggenheim Foundation Scholarship in painting. In 1998-1999 the Contemporary Art Museum of Puerto Rico held a retrospective exhibit titled "Domingo García: 50 Years - Selected Works" of his paintings and sculptures done from the '40s to the '90s. In 2007, the artist opened a 60th Year Art Retrospective Exhibit at the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico,while simultaneously presenting a selection of his most recent work at Obra Galeria Alegria (Old San Juan, PR). That same year, Domingo received for the second time the "Best Retrospective of the Year Award" by the International Art Critics Association. In 2011, Domingo was honored in a reception for his contribution to Latin American art at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. Simultaneously the institution acquired two of Domingo's paintings: Adios Mahatma and La Mujer Criolla to their permanent Latin American collection. Domingo's career spans six decades. He has exhibited internationally and is represented in several major world museums.
