Fede Galizia

Italian (1578–1630)

About the artist:

Fede Galizia was born in 1578 in Italy. She presumably learned to paint from her father, Nunzio Galizia, a painter of miniatures. By the age of twelve, she was sufficiently accomplished as an artist to be mentioned by the writer Giovanni P. Lomazzo. She painted miniatures and altarpieces. Galizia started by painting portraits but today she's known mainly for her still lifes which were rare in Italy at the time. Those that existed were very lavish, while Galizia's were simple and dignified. All still life paitings attributed to her featured a container of fruit with a few pieces scattered by the base of the bowl. Her work was often compared to that of the Spanish painter Francisco de Zurbarán. Fede Galizia died in 1630.
