About The Artist: Francis Atlee Caldwell

Francis Atlee Caldwell was born in San Francisco, CA on Dec. 18, 1911 into a family of artists and writers. Raised in an artistic milieu, "Frank" Caldwell opted for an art career. He studied at the CSFA, Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles, and with Warren Rollins in Santa Fe. After serving in the Marines, he taught at Los Angeles City College and did murals for the U.S. Maritime Commission, Pasadena Playhouse and other theaters. He also did...

About The Medium: Lithograph

A print created using flat stones or metal plates. The artist creates a lithograph by drawing an image directly onto the printing element using materials like lithograph crayons or special grease pencils. After this, the drawing is transferred from the plate to the paper in multiples. A lithograph will not have dots when examined with a magnifying glass.
