A.M. of Zwolle printed by Amand Durand. French Engraver and painter Charles Amand Durand, (1831-1905) is recognized and praised for accomplishing the difficult task of renewing original copper plate designs made by Rembrandt; It is by Amand that many of Rembrandt’s works were saved. He also restored plates by Albrecht Durer, Beham, and other various Old Masters from the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries. The task started when the main curator of the Louvre gave Amand Durand the important mission of restoring the worn down and fragile engravings made by Rembrandt.

About The Artist: I.A.M. of Zwolle

Master I. A. M. of Zwolle (known works 1470–1490, lifetime estimated as ca. 1440–1504) was an anonymous Dutch goldsmith and engraver who signed many of his works with his initials I. A. M. or I. A., and added "Zwolle" to some. His work is characterized by crowded and active scenes of people, graded tones and crisp strokes. Only 26 works by his hand are extant. One theory of Master I. A.
