This rugged portrait of a disheveled woman begging in the street was painted by South African Modern artist Irma Stern in 1923.

The simple and slanted background allows for more focus to be given to the subject. This gouache painting is framed in gold and signed and numbered in the lower right. On the verso, several newspaper clippings about Stern are attached.

Irma Stern was a major South African artist who achieved national and international recognition in her lifetime. Almost one hundred solo exhibitions were held during her lifetime both in South Africa and Europe, including Germany, France, Italy and England.
