About The Artist: James Carlin

James Carlin, an internationally acclaimed Nutley artist, was a master in the watercolor medium. He experimented with oils, black and white graphics and stained glass. The winner of many prestigious prizes, including the George A. Zabriskie Award in Water Color presented by the National Academy in New York and the Silver Medal of Honor from the New Jersey Water Color Society, he was active from the years before World War II through the 1970s....

About The Medium: Charcoal

A form of dry art medium made of finely ground organic materials that are held together by a gum or wax binder or produced without the use of binders by eliminating the oxygen inside the material during the production process. Charcoal can produce lines that are very light or intensely black, while being easily removable, yet vulnerable to leaving stains on paper. The dry medium can be applied to almost any surface from smooth to very coarse.
