Joan Miro was a Catalan painter who combined abstract art with surrealist fantasy, using his signature biomorphic forms and geometric shapes to form a unique identity.
This etching titled "Pygmies Under the Moon" is signed in pencil. Although now considered to be a slur, the term pygmy began as an anthropological term to describe any people group in which the average height is significantly shorter than the global average. Most commonly, these groups were found throughout Africa. This interpretation by Miro is likely another piece in a long tradition of white Europeans infantilizing and mythologizing the existence of non-white cultures.
