An etching by Mair von Landshut printed by Amand Durand.

French Engraver and painter Charles Amand Durand, (1831-1905) is recognized and praised for accomplishing the difficult task of renewing original copper plate designs made by Rembrandt; It is by Amand that many of Rembrandt’s works were saved. He also restored plates by Albrecht Durer, Beham, and other various Old Masters from the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries. The task started when the main curator of the Louvre gave Amand Durand the important mission of restoring the worn down and fragile engravings made by Rembrandt.

About The Artist: Mair von Landshut

b. about 1450 possibly Freising, Germany, d. after 1504 possibly Landshut, Germany German draughtsman, engraver and painter. The signature Mair appears on all but one of his twenty-two engravings and on one of three woodcuts. The rest of his posthumously acquired name derives from the Landshut coat of arms on the engraving Hour of Death (1499; Lehrs, no. 19), which presumably indicates that Mair was working there.
