Marcus Uzilevsky

American (1937–2015)

About the artist:

Distinguished California artist Marcus Uzilevsky, most known for his linear landscapes and music series,is represented in the permanent collections of numerous museums around the world. Since 1974 he has had over 50 one-man shows and obtained many awards in juried museum competitions. Originally from New York City, he graduated from the School of Art and Design and has been painting, drawing, printmaking and making music ever since. His stylistic explorations range from linear to pointillistic landscapes, from gestural impressions of music to the lush color and patterns of his Homage to Klimt series. His early musical endeavors include performing on Dick Clark's American Bandstand, jamming with Bob Dylan in Greenwich Village, touring with The New Christy Minstrels, working with renowned producer Phil Spector and producing/recording for the CBS, Reprise and Folkways/Smithsonian record labels. In 1967 Uzilevsky's multi-faceted creative odyssey led him from New York to California, where he now resides. His universal appeal has been substantiated by the sale of over a half million lithographs in multiple styles. Art and music merged in the 1988 performance of his Folk Symphony for Sara by the Arlington Symphony Orchestra. His orchestral compositions enhanced by projected images combined the best of Uzilevsky's visual and musical chromatics. In the 1990's, using the pseudonym Uzca, Marcus has recorded and released internationally the Slice of Light and Gypsy Dreams CD's, his personal blend of World Music. Director Francis Ford Coppola featured Uzilevsky's art in the film The Rainmaker. The Five Minute Hour Stress Relief System video (PSI-Tronics Visions, Inc.) features his imagery, narration and musical compositions. Uzilevsky has recently been recognized in the Rhino Records compilation Nuggets: Original Artifacts from the First Psychadelic Era 1965-1968, The Great Psychadelic Discography (Canongate Books Ltd.) and I Want To Take You Higher: The Psychadelic Era 1965-1969 (The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame/Chronicle Books) for his musical contributions with his group, The Third Bardo.
