Marjorie Mason

American (1955)

About the artist:

Marjorie Mason was born in New York City in 1955. She graduated from The Shipley School in 1974 and received her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1981. Her work in monotype and oils is an expression of Martha’s Vineyard land and seascapes, as well as the quality of light unique to that region. She has been working in monotype for over 25 years, developing her own technique and process. Her paintings are done in a traditional method of oil painting. Her process of painting “wet on wet” in oil produces unique and beautiful effects when printed. The final painting “echoes the transparency of a watercolor, the mystery of pastel and the permanence of oil”. Mason’s favorite times to capture the Vineyard are sunrise and sunset, when the light is cleanest and warmest respectively. She often grabs her camera at the hint of a storm. Marjorie’s love of the Vineyard is clearly reflected in all of her work.
