about Hay Ride

Rising high into the distance, Nicky Watanabe's portrayal of rolling hills border the fields and farms of the country townsfolk below.

Picking apples, stacking hay, or plowing fields, many of the farmers perform mundane tasks that have been infused with a youthful, exciting energy. While the townsfolk either work or play, the artist has rendered the buildings' interiors with red, orange, and yellow color to insinuate warmth.

About The Artist: Nicky Watanabe

Watanabe was born in Japan in 1937. Educated there, he graduated college with a degree in Communications. As a result of his initial choice of a career in the television industry, he was sent to the United States to study our production techniques. This experience ultimately led to his decision to relocate to San Francisco in 1972. It was here that Watanabe began painting. About The Medium: Screenprint

A stencil process employing a frame on which silk or synthetic fabric is stretched. Stencils are hand-drawn or hand-cut and placed on the stretched fabric and act as a block out when the ink passes through the screen by means of a squeegee onto the paper, the non-stencil areas create the image. Also known as silkscreen or serigraph.
