about Rocky Shore

Looking over a tide pool surrounded by small plants and rocks, Olga Poloukhine's beach scene features the hallmark elements of any beach including beachgrass and sand dunes while only allowing the viewer to see a glimpse of the ocean.

A common aspect of her work, the artist's limited inclusion of the actual ocean does not limit the scope of her beach scenes, as she compensates by including many other elements found in these environments with careful detail.

About The Artist: Olga Poloukhine

Born in Paris, France, of Russian emigre parents, Olga Poloukhine came to America after World War II. Upon graduating from High School, she received a BA from Douglass College, Rutgers, with a High Honors paper on "The Russian Icon", and continued at Columbia Teachers College, earning an MA in Art Education. After several years of teaching in public schools Ms. Poloukhine began focusing on her own work, first devoting herself almost entirely to...

About The Medium: Aquatint

An etching process in which tone is created by treating a plate with fine particles of acid resistant material (like powder resin) and then placing the plate in an acid bath. The acid bites into the plate between the grains of resin and when printed, the mass of tiny spots produces a textured area with tonal effects similar to watercolor wash.
