about Ballerina

A ballerina holds her pointe ballet shoes in her left hand in this lithograph by Richard Shepard.

As an artist, Shepard often combined delicate portraits with colorful abstract forms, as seen here on either side of the dancer. After returning from WWII, he became an illustrator for fashion publications such as Harper's Bazaar as well as showing his own works in New York.

About The Artist: Richard Shepard

Richard Shepard was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1926. He loved art as a boy growing up in the City. He attended the High School of Performing Arts in New York City - the same school that was in the movie and TV series Fame. When he turned 18, he enlisted in the Navy and fought in World War II. He was stationed in Japan where he painted a mural in a church for the Company Chaplain. When he retumed from the war, he went to school at Parsons...

The artist creates a lithograph by drawing an image directly onto the printing element using materials like lithograph crayons or special grease pencils. After this, the drawing is transferred from the plate to the paper in multiples. A lithograph will not have dots when examined with a magnifying glass.
