Robert Kasimir

Austrian (1914–2002)

About the artist:

Son of the famous Tanna and Luigi Kasimir, Robert was born in 1914 Vienna, Austria. He studied under Hans Frank at the Academy of Graphic Art. Later, he moved to the United States in 1936 to enroll at the Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. During his two years of study, he produced etchings of the different sites he traveled to across America. He became greatly-known for his unique take on the multiple plate color etching process invented from his parents. The cultural, architectural influences within Europe during and after the second World War greatly inspired Robert. In this, he began producing a prolific body of work that can still be found in many collections and institutions across the globe today. Robert passed away in Austria in 2002. At first, Luigi did not think that Robert was good enough to sign the Kasimir name on his work. Robert would sign his work using the name “F O Robert” (abbreviation for Franz Otto Robert). After his father passed, he signed his prints “Robert Kasimir”.
