About The Artist: Rokushu Mizufune

Rokushu Mizufune was born in 1912 in Kure, Hiroshima. He entered the Tokyo School of Fine Arts where he studied sculpture and graduated in 1936. From Hiratsuka Unichi he learned woodblock printmaking. While still a student, he became a co-founder in 1932 of the artist group Shin Hanga Shudan (New Print Group). After World War II, the artist worked as an art teacher. From 1960 until 1977 he was headmaster of Kanto Gakuin Primary School. But he...

About The Medium: Woodcut

A relief process in which the image is cut in a block of wood with tools such as knives, goughers or chisels. The image is inked with a roller, paper is applied to the surface and the back is then rubbed by hand or with a rubbing tool, transferring the image to the paper.
