about Robert Blackburn

This lithograph by artist Ron Adams depicts the renowned printer Robert Blackburn in his workshop in NYC.

Blackburn was involved with every major player of the Harlem Renaissance along with most of the NYC printmaking scene in the mid-20th century. He was friends with James Baldwin and Langston Hughes, produced work with and alongside Romare Bearden, Will Barnet, Jacob Lawrence, Stanley William Hayter, Elizabeth Catlett, Benny Andrews, Leonora Carrington, Faith Ringgold, Helen Frankenthaler, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Larry Rivers, and more. His workshop provided generous opportunities for minority and third-world students, turning into a cooperative in later years that sponsored the work of hundreds of artists. This print honors the legacy of that practice and is signed and numbered by Ron Adams in pencil.

About The Medium: Lithograph

A print created using flat stones or metal plates. The artist creates a lithograph by drawing an image directly onto the printing element using materials like lithograph crayons or special grease pencils. After this, the drawing is transferred from the plate to the paper in multiples. A lithograph will not have dots when examined with a magnifying glass.
